Over the past couple days I have been obsessing over a song by Michael Hedges. He was an amazing acoustical guitarist/singer/song writer who passed away tragically many years ago. I was introduced to him while I was in Seattle, but just recently "rediscovered" his work. He's a bit new-agey at times, so I don't love everything he's ever done. One of my all time favorite artists (and a blast to see in concert) Keller Williams lists Michael Hedges as one of his inspirations. Point is, I really like this song. The song is based off (word for word actually) a poem by E.E. Cummings. I've been sitting here trying to figure out what I think the poem is really about. Clearly it's about love. Romantic love? Love of God? Love of family? Maybe all of the above? I find myself thinking of a combination of people when I hear this song/read this poem. My kids, my mom, my husband, those I love and have loved. It uplifts me and makes me depressed all at the same time. I really suggest googling this song and giving it a listen (unless you like butt-rockin'-death metal...then you're not gonna like it). Words to the poem are below:
i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)
