My best friend

Today I had a bit of a heart breaker conversation with WA. We were riding in the car, just he and I, and out of the blue he said "Mommy, Jacob is my best friend.". Now, that's great, Jacob is a pretty rad kid, but they only problem is that Jacob lives in CT. He and WA were classmates at WA's old daycare. WA looooved him, possibly even idolized him a bit. I'm very glad that WA formed a friendship that was so meaningful to him, but the same sort of thing doesn't seem to be happening here in Ohio. We then went on to talk about Jacob and how he lives in CT and how we now live in OH. I asked who his best friend here is and he said "No one.". I said "No one?" "Not even Will or Owen?" (two of his new classmates). Once again he said "No.". "Mommy, I don't have a best friend here, no one likes me." Uff, and there went the dagger in to my heart.

His teacher says that he plays with all the kids at school and there's no real reason for concern (we'd chatted about how WA was doing and I asked if he was making friends). Still, it kind of sucks when you're kid essentially tells you he feels like a loser. My wish for him is that he keeps the memory of all his best CT friends alive (there were a few really great ones!) and also finds someone here that he connects with as well. I know he will, it's just that I worry. And guilt...there's a bit of that too.

Oh, WA! His CT buddies miss him, too. But remember, it took 3 years to form the CT bonds... in time he'll have best friends in OH - even if the CT kids are cooler ;)

Awww shucks, we think WA is great too!

Have you had any playdates outside of school? Josh & I were debating if our kids picked their friends or we did? Kind of a which came first the chicken or the egg? Did they make friends with the kids & then we ended up being friends with the family or the other way around? Just thinking maybe if WA spends some time with a playmate outside of school, maybe he'll develop more of a bond...

Sounds like the school is great & I'm sure he'll develop some lasting friendships there soon!

BTW - Hope the new job is going well, did you know that Josh works for JPMC?

Ditto on MLH comment - CT kids are cooler! Also, ditto on DM comment. DM and I are facing the similar issue with the older ones who are now tending to pick their own friends vs the ones we pick for them by being friends with their parents. LD didn't move to OH, but still has a hard time with fitting in at TT on occasion, just the nature of moving. I am sure WA will make friends in no time!! Miss you guy and hope the job is going well. - DS
